Com Château Léoville-Las-Cases Second Growth, St-Julien Le Petit Lion, St-Julien (red) The high-performing second-growth estate Château Léoville-LasCases uses vines from other estates to produce its first wine, Clos du Marquis. The 2007 vintage saw the arrival of a second wine, Le Petit Lion, made from vines grown on the main estate. Le Petit Lion is full of charm, with autumn fruits, and some summery touches of redcurrant and even elderflower from its high degree of Merlot. Las-Cases is run today by Jean-Hubert Delon, the fifth generation to take charge of an estate whose vineyards are next to Château Latour on the border of St-Julien and Pauillac.
They were planted by Camille Godard, a former owner of the estate who was also a botanist. It all adds to the appeal of this most romantic of Margaux estates, which is today in the hands of the eighth generation of the Schyler family. It is run by general manager, Philippe Delfault, who believes Bordeaux should be about elegance and balance rather than power, and the estate’s wines certainly live up to those beliefs. Vinified to favor fresh fruit over extracted tannins, the second wine, Les Charmes de Kirwan, is soft and gentle, very much a little sister wine of the Margaux appellation.
It is owned by the very respected Alexandre Thienpont, whose grandfather Georges bought the estate in 1924. As with Pétrus right next door, the soil here is rich in iron ore, although there is more gravel at VCC than clay. It is planted with 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and extends to some 35 acres (14ha). com Vieux Château Gaubert Graves Vieux Château Gaubert, Graves (red and white) Owned by Dominique Haverlan, Vieux Château Gaubert is a highly reliable estate, and, even though it is not officially classified as such, it is one of the finest in the region.
