Indd 26 4/30/2012 5:32:35 PM NIETZSCHE’S EARLY WRITINGS  27 Nietzsche continued to write autobiographical notes, texts, and diaries (and his correspondence also had strong autobiographical elements), and although there is no document of a similar length or with such a broad scope until Ecce Homo in 1888, one can find over ten further autobiographies or partial autobiographies among his early writings, many of them written for specific purposes (such as school assignments, university graduation, a presentation of himself for Basel, a self-presentation for a philosophical journal), as well as others that were written more for his own sake.

LINK TO NIETZSCHE’S EARLY WRITINGS  17 Thus his change from theology to philology, undertaken in 1865, formalized in curricular terms a switch of focus that had already taken place. What was Nietzsche like as a student in Bonn? He joined a Burschenschaft or student fraternity, called Frankonia, but soon tired of the traditional student predilection for alcohol or what he called their Biermaterialismus (letter to Carl von Gersdorff, 25 May 1865; KSB 2, 55). Although he initially joined in and received his own drinking name — “Gluck” or, presumably, glug (letter to Franziska Nietzsche, 7–9 December 1864; KSB 2, 22) — he gained a reputation, as he was aware, for being not just an authority on all matters musical, but also for being — well, a bit of an odd fellow (“sonderbarer Kauz”); he could, as he himself admitted, be a bit of a pain (“ein wenig Quälgeist”) for himself as for others (letter to Franziska and Elisabeth Nietzsche, 18 February 1865; KSB 2, 43).

Like Friedrich August Wolf (a classical scholar who influenced Barthold Georg Niebuhr and Leopold von Ranke and, together with them, was the father of the new historical approach and methods), to whom he approvingly refers, Nietzsche affirms both the ideal and Bildung associated with art and the newly discovered truths and methods of scholarship. ” In other words, the details of philological scholarship need be placed into a philosophical Weltanschauung, which alone can give sense to them. This realization of the importance of history and scholarship, as well as his tendency to regard them as less important than good philosophy, would characterize almost all of Nietzsche’s later thinking.
