Thread Although there are some specialized types of thread designed for particular types of projects, most sewing thread is 100 percent cotton, polyester or a cotton/ polyester blend (the polyester adds strength). It comes in a wide range of colors to match almost any color fabric you might want to sew. Chances are you’ll be set for most projects if you have both black and white thread plus a few neutral colors like gray, brown and denim blue. If you’re sewing something that contains multiple colors, choose a thread that will match the largest section of the right side of the fabric best.

You always want to press, not iron, fusible web and fusible interfacing (see Fusibles: Sewing with Your Iron) to keep the melting goo and fabric pieces from sliding out of position. ROTARY CUTTERS AND TRIPS TO THE ER This is no joke. Rotary cutters are a sewer’s best friend and the most dangerous tool in your sewing kit. Even an old dull blade is razor sharp. Never, never—let me repeat that: never—put your fingers in the line of fire of your rotary cutter. Never cut toward your fingers or your hand.

2 PIN SHAPES IN PLACE Pin the shapes into place on the T-shirt. If the craft felt is very thin, you may want to attach it to the shirt using fusible web and a hot iron first. Or, for multi-layered, 3-D shapes made of different felt colors such as flowers, you may want to fuse them together into their final layout before attaching them to the shirt. 3 SEW FELT TO SHIRT Stitch the shapes down with a straight stitch around the outer edges, using embroidery thread for extra color if you’re hand sewing.
