Despite this, its reputation has not only survived but has also had new life breathed into it as time has gone by, and the movie today stands as a signal of the studios’ intent at the time, and the determination of some not to be deflected entirely from the economic conditions outside movie theatres. Russell Campbell’s assessment of Heroes for Sale actually downplays the entreaty to social action.

And time after time, goodly heroes come to the rescue of that system, so much so that the narrative form employed by such a storyline became a model that became particular not just to 1930s political movies, but to films in the genre across the ages. In the first instance, however, Hollywood’s dive into the political maelstrom was neither a commercial godsend nor a fully-fledged ideological investment. Political awareness initially raised its head, not just with the films described above, but in other genres too, notably the gangster film, as already intimated.
