By 1839 sugar had became such a profitable export that it was monopolised by the crown (Cushman 1993: 81; Seksan 1989: 94–5). Non-phrai labour became critical to the state, and from the reign of Rama II key public works were contracted to Chinese work gangs who were paid in cash. Chinese craftsmen were also hired to build and decorate temples in the capital (Porphant 1994: 40–1). From the first Chakkri reign, private trade expanded alongside state-run exporting, and by the early 1820s it overtook royally-sponsored mercantile activity.
